AIC's goal is to help accelerate Indigenous business in Ontario (Canada). AIC helps its network of 4 southern Ontario headquartered Indigenous Financial Institutions (IFIs) manage shared programs/funds. This includes the Indigenous Business Financing Program (IBFP).
Are you/your business located in one of our IFIs service areas; and, is for-profit and generating active-business income; and, is owned and controlled (normally >= 50%) by Eligible Indigenous entrepreneurs (who hold recognized ancestry/membership documentation)?
IFIs are the key source of loans and other financing in support of Indigenous business growth.
Funding for capital costs (i.e. equipment) and working capital needs (i.e. startup operating costs), is sourced primarily from loans and other commercial financing that supplement a client's equity and other funding.
IFIs offer loans and potential access to other complimentary financing and funding (some non-repayable, if available) in support of eligible Indigenous entrepreneurs and their businesses.
Our IFIs ultimately make ALL decisions regarding the funds administered by AIC.
Please note that AIC does not offer any direct lending and IFIs are consulted on any ther funding.
Which IFI can serve you depends on your residency (where you and your business are physically located), ancestry/membership documentation requirements and type of business. Our IFIs serve Eligible First Nation (“Status”), Métis and, Inuit/Inuk Clients, mostly in southern Ontario*.
* Expanded service areas: The Métis Voyageur Development Fund (MVDF) serves Eligible Métis clients throughout Ontario and works with AIC on behalf of clients in both southern Ontario AND northeastern Ontario.
First Nations Agriculture & Finance Ontario (FNAFO, formerly IAPO) serves Eligible First Nation ("Status") agriculture clients throughout Ontario and works with AIC on behalf of agriculture clients in southern Ontario AND clients not otherwise serviced in northeastern Ontario.
You (or a verifiable parent or grandparent) hold a Certificate of Indian Status ("Status Card") issued by the Government of Canada (Indigenous Services Canada).
You are registered as a Citizen of the Métis Nation of Ontario (MNO); or, are a registered member of other Métis organizations recognized by the Métis National Council**.
You Hold Inuk/Inuit membership recognized though Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami.
** Other Métis organizations recognized by the Métis National Council, include: the Manitoba Métis Federation; the Métis Nation of Saskatchewan; the Métis Nation of Alberta; the Métis Nation of British Columbia; the Métis Settlements General Council; and, Métis Nation of the Northwest Territory.
AIC recommends every client first establish a relationship with their local Indigenous Financial Institutions (IFI). IFIs offer business loans and other programs, plus, they can make recommendations on AIC non-repayable contributions towards a portion of eligible capital and non-capital cost, when/if available. By understanding your business, your local IFI will be positioned to help you grow your business, either now and/or in the future. Even if you don't access your local IFI financing now, your IFI may be able to find other sources on your behalf. This includes finding small non-repayable contributions ("grants") for planning activities, management support and, most importantly, marketing/channel development.
